Cat Pelt Colors Guide

Something quick I whipped up because I feel that most cat pelt guides don't really capture just how vastly different one gene or combinations of genes can look. I also tend to see the colors "washed-out" when in fact cats (like humans) have fur colors that exist on the red spectrum for the large part. I attempted to capture some of this here with "slider" versions of the colors on this chart. These are not required colors but merely a guide to shades/saturations that are acceptable. I also rarely see information on rufousing and rusting/tarnishing so I added demos here. Dilute/dilute modifier also range from almost as dark as the original color to highly desaturated like standards of the colors. There is almost no limit to how creative you can be with your cat design!

* This coat color does not exist as a self. While selfs of these colors are allowed, your cat should at least have minimal facial markings.
^ This coat color starts off as black/blue and is a genetic variant of black/blue.

Rufousing: A polygenic trait that saturates the ground of a cat with reddish-brown tones. Commonly seen in Abyssinian/Somali breeds solely, it does exist in other fur patterns/breeds. Polygenic means many genes are responsible for the colors displayed. Rufousing can fill the entire ground, parts of the ground, just around the striping or almost non-existent.1

Rusting/Tarnishing: A "bleaching" effect that happens on cats from the sun. Most starkly seen on black/blue cats and on silvers, in saturated cats it can turn the sun exposed hairs red while in desaturated cats it turns the sun exposed hairs yellow. You may include some level of rusting/tarnishing in your design if you wish; though it typically is strongest on the back, face and paws.
